Bushfire in WA's north downgraded

A bushfire north of Broome in Western Australia's Kimberley region that authorities believe was deliberately lit is no longer threatening lives and homes but has burnt through 8000 hectares.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued a watch and act warning for people near Barred Creek and those travelling on Cape Leveque Road and Manari Road, 40 kilometres north of Broome, just before 12.30pm (WST) on Sunday.

Three hours later, the blaze was downgraded to an advice.

The unpredictable and out-of-control bushfire, which started on Cape Leveque Road, 30 kilometres from the Broome Highway, is moving fast in a southerly direction and burning in inaccessible terrain.

DFES said 25 firefighters were on the scene.

The bushfire was reported on Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the blaze is suspicious.
