Dog dumped in bin at Brisbane playground

A three-year-old dog has been left fighting for its life after a Brisbane rubbish collector found the animal dumped inside a bin at a children's playground.

The Miniature Fox Terrier, named Gyber by veterinary staff, was taken to a surgery and was subsequently taken in by the RSPCA.

Gyber, who has black and tan markings with a white stripe down the centre of his face, had a bad flea infestation and was very dirty.

He has local paralysis and was vomiting on arrival at the RSPCA. Gyber had x-rays and is on a fluid drip.

The discovery by the contractor at Strickland Terrace in Sherwood has shocked animal lovers.

"The bin is a tall sheer metal container with a low roof, so there is no way he could have got into the bin himself and he had no way of ever escaping. Someone dumped him there," said RSPCA Queensland Inspector Penny Flaherty, who is investigating the incident.

"We don’t know how long he was in there as the rubbish is only collected once a week."

The RSPCA is urging anyone with information about the incident, or who may know the owner of the dog to call them on 1300 ANIMAL (264 625).
