Worst weather still to come

The weather bureau is warning South Australians to batten down the hatches as the wildest weather of the year hits home.

Wind gusts of up to 100kph have already left a trail of destruction across the state and forecasters said the worst is yet to come.

The weather bureau said the next 48 hours will be the worst, particularly in the Adelaide Hills and southern suburbs.

It is predicting localised flooding across the metropolitan area and winds topping 100kph.

A cold snap predicted for Saturday could even produce snow on Mt Lofty.

Shoppers at Salisbury had a lucky escape today when a tree was torn out of the ground by a fierce gust of wind.

It damaged seven cars in the car park, including that of one shopper who only ducked into the bank for a moment.

There were similar scenes and Hahndorf as a fallen tree caused significant damage to a pergola, while a house at Kilburn went within inches of being crushed by a fallen tree.

The State Emergency Service has had more than 300 callouts since midnight.

Volunteers have been kept busy in the Adelaide Hills with trees bringing down power lines at Crafers and Stirling.

The main road between Echunga and Hahndorf also had to be closed for several hours.

More than 10,000 homes and businesses across the state have been left without power today.

Around 6000 emergency personnel are on standby for the predicted storm overnight.
