Man dies after shooting in Sydney's west

A man has been killed in a targeted shooting in Sydney, but police say it's too early to determine if it's linked to a bikie shooting earlier in the week.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was shot while in the front yard of a home at southwest suburban Abbotsbury about 10am (AEST) on Friday.

"I understand people heard at least three gunshots," Fairfield police commander Superintendent Peter Lennon told reporters.

“We are attempting to establish a motive for the shooting and determine whether there are any links to gangs or organised crime."

The gang squad, homicide squad and local police are investigating.

They are speaking to officers at Eastlakes, in southeast Sydney, where three bikie associates were shot at, one fatally, in a targeted drive by shooting on Monday.

But Supt Lennon told reporters it's too early for police to determine whether bikies were involved in the latest shooting.

The man is yet to be formally identified and Supt Lennon said police aren't sure what he was doing there and whether he was meeting others.

Police expect to determine his identity later on Friday.

Supt Lennon has appealed for witness to come forward with any information about the shooting which he described as "despicable" and "outrageous".

"This is just a wicked attack," he said.

"This is a residential area (and) it's school holidays."

The man was shot multiple times and was declared dead on arrival at Liverpool Hospital.

There are reports the man suffered a heart attack after he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting.

Paramedics tried to revive the victim with CPR.

The police helicopter was called in to search for a man seen running from the scene.

It's believed the man was wearing a dark hooded top was heading towards Hackett Road.

Officers are also looking for a Silver Subaru.

“It is believed a number of vehicles were seen in the vicinity of Thorpe Place, Cowpasture and Hackett Road this morning and I would ask anyone who may have been going about their daily business and saw these vehicles or any suspicious behaviour to contact police,” said Superintendent Lennon.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
