Man charged over 2003 attempted murder

Almost a decade after a woman was bashed in her home at Port Lincoln, police have charged a man over the attack.

The man, from Adelaide’s western suburbs, was arrested after police were able to identify him through DNA, it is alleged.

For nearly 10 years loved ones have struggled to comprehend why Nannette Clarke was targetted in the attack.

She was 48, a mother of two and local book keeper with no obvious enemies.

But on the night of August 19, 2003, she was clubbed with a blunt weapon inside her home on Bay View Rd at Port Lincoln.

She suffered severe head injuries and a broken arm.

Weeks later, a fragile Ms Clarke faced the media with a sketch of her attacker, pleading for anyone who recognised him to contact police.

But no one did.

Police had always hoped DNA found on a rope and gloves left at the scene would lead to an arrest, but they couldn’t find a match - until now.

A 31-year-old man fronted the Adelaide Magistrates Court today charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass and attempted murder.

Friends say while Ms Clarke is too traumatised to speak today, she would be relieved.

“I think it’s fantastic that they’ve kept it up,” one Port Lincoln resident told 7News.

The accused’s identity has been suppressed.

He made no application for bail and we will reappear in court in June.
