Scammers pose as Meals on Wheels volunteers

South Australian police are warning the elderly to be vigilant, following attempts by scammers hoping to gain access to homes, while posing as Meals on Wheels volunteers.

Just this week a woman claiming to be a volunteer tried to talk her way into the home of an elderly female client, by asking her to use her toilet.

A similar incident occurred in another suburbs, when a man, also posing as a volunteer tried to gain entry with another client, but he was turned away.

Meals on Wheels CEO, Sharyn Broer, is urging all Meals on Wheels clients to be careful.

"Fortunately nothing was taken and no harm was done to that lady,"

"But she was concerned this was out of the ordinary, and it didn't seem right to her and she let Meals on Wheels know straight away."

Sergeant Natalie Warburton said police are already investigating reports of bogus Meals on Wheels volunteers, reportedly knocking on doors asking clients for money.

"The simple answer is don't let anyone into your home if you don't know who they are," she said.

"If they cannot provide ID do not let them into your home."
