Transformers, more than meets the eye?

That's correct, to transport one, huge power transformer about 2,000 kilometres from Queensland to Adelaide it takes exactly five prime movers and a police convoy.

The 130 metre-long juggernaut is pushing the 188 tonne transformer into Lower Light tonight, and is then expected to recommence its journey tomorrow, to eventually get the massive transformer to the new City West substation at Keswick by Thursday morning.

The total weight of the convoy is a 'mammoth' 450 tonnes, and the transformers are the heaviest objects to be transported on South Australian roads.

Police ask for patience from motorists, and advise that they may need to pull off the road, to allow the convoy to pass.

Tomorrow's expected journey will take the transformer down Grand Junction Rd, onto Addison Rd, then onto Cheltenham Parade, Port Rd, James Congdon Drive, Railway Tce and finally finishing up at the Keswick Terminal.

The new sub station will use the massive transformers to convert high voltage electricity into lower voltage energy by ElectraNet, to then be distributed by ETSA to Adelaide homes.

The sub station is expected to be completed by December 2011.
