Factory worker burned in explosion

A worker has suffered burns to a third of his body after an explosion at a Spotswood factory.

The 32-year-old Geelong man was rushed to hospital at around 11.15am (AEST) on Friday after molten glass spilled onto him at the O-I Asia Pacific glassworks factory.

The factory worker is in a critical condition at the Alfred Hospital.

Paramedic Mark Bruce said the man had burns to his abdomen, chest, neck and arms.

"We were told he was working with molten glass," Mr Bruce said.

"Somehow that has spilled onto his uniform and caused his uniform to catch on fire."

Mr Bruce said the injured man was placed in an induced coma to alleviate the pain from the burns, which covered about 30 per cent of his body.

About 15 to 20 per cent of the burns were full thickness burns.

Rosanna Bonaccurso from WorkSafe Victoria said two investigators were on the scene trying to determine what happened.

"This man has leant over a machine to change some sort of a ring on the machine, and his shirt has caught on fire," Ms Bonaccurso said.
