Two people dead in crash near Ki Ki

Two people have died in a horror smash on the Dukes Highway this morning, two kilometres north-west of Ki Ki.

A woman from Hope Valley and a man who is believed to be a British tourist were traveling west along the Dukes Highway when their car slammed into a semi-trailer coming in the opposite direction.

“It appears at this stage that the commodore has swerved onto the incorrect side of the road and the driver’s side of the commodore has collided with the driver’s side of the semi trailer,” Major Crash Investigator, Senior Sargeant Brenton Rowney, said.

The impact of the crash caused the semi trailer to push the car 80m backwards, into nearby scrubland.

Investigators have said the extensive damage made it difficult to find the cause.

“At this stage we don’t have an actual cause for the crash other than what it appears that the commodore is on the incorrect side of the road,” Snr Sgt Rowney said.

“The impact of the two vehicles is quite substantial, you’ve got a full sized semi trailer loaded with material that’s collided virtually head on with a Holden Sedan.”

“On the Dukes Highway there’s ample overtaking lanes for people to overtake safely – whether the issue comes down to fatigue, at this stage it’s too early to say.”

The driver of the semi trailer was taken to the Murray Bridge hospital, to be treated for shock.

Police have closed off the section of the Dukes Highway near Ki Ki, between Coonalpyn and Coomandook, while Major Crash Investigators are at the scene.

It is the same stretch of road where a man died last month, when the van he was driving slammed into a semi trailer.

The state’s road toll now sits at 33, compared with 45 at the same time last year.
