Uproar over MP's Facebook comments

A Liberal MP's Facebook comments on Islam have sparked uproar in state parliament.

Bernie Finn denies his views are racist, but a Muslim MP has taken offence as Premier Ted Baillieu called for tolerance.

Labor MP Jane Garrett raised the politically explosive issue during Question Time, demanding to know why members of the Government had used the social networking site to post such material.

Mr Finn wrote that he "doesn't understand how concerns about a religion that seems to sanction decapitation can be construed as 'racism'."

But Labor MP John Eren, one of three Muslims in parliament, says he was offended.

He said: "I'm always offended when minority groups are particularly isolated in terms of being picked on."

The Premier called for tolerance and common sense to prevail.

He said: "I have not seen the comments, but I would encourage all Victorians to demonstrate tolerance."
