Six-month-old puppy survives surgery after swallowing 20cm steak knife

WARNING, GRAPHIC CONTENT: A young Staffordshire Bull Terrier has survived surgery after she swallowed a 20cm steak knife.

Six-month-old Lexi has lived to tell the tale after the large knife became lodged next to her heart.

The pup, who lives in Parramatta, NSW, was taken to the vet after she was repeatedly vomiting.

An X-RAY baffled Vet Dr Margaret Scimone, who discovered the pooch had somehow swallowed the knife.

Lexi was rushed in for life-saving surgery at Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) in Sydney’s west.

The dog endured 45 minute surgery where the knife was delicately pulled back up her oesophagus.

Her owner thought she was going to die.

ARH medical specialist Dr Jody Braddock said she had never seen anything like it.

“We knew that Lexie's best chance of survival would be to remove the knife as soon as possible before it could cause more damage,” she said in a post on Facebook.

Lexi spent three days after surgery in intensive care.

She reportedly remains on strict bed rest for the next ten days.

Her owner Tonka was unable to explain how she swallowed the knife.

"It wasn't a little knife, it was a steak knife," she said.

“I broke down in absolute tears seeing that x-ray”.
