Man steals phone, uploads selfie to victim's Facebook

A selfie could be the vital clue to identifying a man who stole a mobile phone from a Melbourne CBD apartment complex.

The man walked into the reception area of an apartment complex on Haig Street, Southbank about 1.30pm on July 5.

Police say he stole a mobile phone from the counter while the concierge was distracted.

The man quickly ran from the building, then used the stolen phone to access the victim’s Facebook account.

He then reportedly posted a picture of himself in a car with an unknown woman.

No one was physically injured during the incident.

Police are hoping someone may recognise the pair from the selfie, and the CCTV vision from the hotel, to assist with their investigation.

The man is believed to be aged in his 20s and was wearing a camouflage cap, a black jacket, three-quarter length pants and black and white shoes during the theft.

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
