Teen in induced coma after ute slams into power pole
Shocking video has captured the moment a Sydney teenager slammed into a power pole while allegedly doing burnouts in his ute in Condell Park on Sunday.
The 16-year-old passenger was put into an induced coma after the crash, while the 17-year-old driver and another passenger, 15, were uninjured.
The footage shows the car slamming into the pole, before the driver and the younger passenger can be seen getting out of the wreckage and frantically trying to free their friend.
The boy eventually emerges from the car, crosses the street and collapses on the side of the road.
The driver was on his red P-plates.
Acting Commander Stuart Smith said the injured teen was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the vehicle now faces serious charges due to his alleged reckless driving.
“Any driver of a motor vehicle whose behaviour results in the injury or death to another motorist there is a 14 year penalty,” Act. Comm. Smith said.
"I can't make it any clearer than that.”
There have been 14 fatalities in the 18 days so far this year, including four over the weekend alone.
“Despite all of the warnings through the holiday period the weekend has been a dreadful one in terms of errant driver behaviour," Act Comm Smith said.
“We're fed up at the behaviour, we're fed up that the public aren't putting the brain back in to gear to get back into the working year."
Police are conducting Operation Arrive Alive, where police estimate one million drivers will be breath-tested, 2,000 will be caught drink driving and 20,000 drivers will be fined for speeding.
Double demerit points are in place from Friday until Australia Day.
