NSW man attacked after landing on shark

A NSW central coast beach has been closed after a man was bitten on the hand by a shark during an early morning surf.

A 40-year-old man was bitten as he duck-dived through a wave at Shelly Beach just after 6am on Tuesday, police said.

An off-duty paramedic treated the man at the scene before he drove himself to hospital with minor puncture injuries to his left hand.

The surfer was in good spirits and posted a photo on social media of himself dressed in his black wetsuit, holding his surfboard and proudly showing off his bloodied hand.

He reportedly drove himself to hospital after the incident.

ABC News reports the man was from Berkeley Vale was four metres offshore when the attack occurred.

"We think he's landed on top of the shark," Beach lifeguard supervisor Trevor Roberts told the ABC.

"He's got a puncture wound to his left hand and he's got about an eight-inch diameter set of teeth marks in the board, but he is fine.
