Leeton goes yellow for Stephanie

Family and friends of Stephanie Scott have gathered in Leeton Park on what should have been her wedding day.

Her fiance Aaron Leeson-Wolley, who wore yellow instead of a black tuxedo, was supported by hundreds of people as he was visibly distraught.

Ms Scott's family joined the memorial picnic to honour their daughter together with the locals of the small town.

"Unfortunately she was taken away from us for a short time but now we've got her back and we will restore her dignity," Ms Scott's father Bob reportedly said during the memorial.

He said that he wishes she will be remembered for the great girl she was, not the tragic way she died.

Mr Scott was surrounded by his wife, children and Mr Leeson-Wolley when speaking to the public.

"Stephanie was a bubbly, bright, witty, intelligent fun-loving girl who has obviously impacted on many people here to today and our wishes for the future are that will continue in your minds. That you remember her as the girl she was," Mr Scott said according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

"We thank you greatly for your support... we are truly touched," he continued.

Police have confirmed they believe a body found yesterday in New South Wales bushland is that of missing bride-to-be Ms Scott.

In a press conference on Saturday morning, police confirmed they found remains of a body in Cocoparra National Park, north of Griffith in the state's Riverina Region, at 5pm on Friday.

"I've been asked over the last couple of days about whether there had been burning of the body. I can certainly say that is confirmed, it's the case. And it was probably about five metres from the roadway," Griffith local area commander Superintendent Michael Rowan told reporters.

The body will be taken to a facility in Glebe, Sydney, for formal identification testing.

The discovery came after reports officers found a camera with images of a burned body in 24-year-old Vincent Stanford's car on Wednesday night.

Stanford worked as a cleaner at Ms Scott's workplace - Leeton High School - and was charged with murdering the teacher on Easter Sunday.

The much-loved high school teacher was last seen at her workplace, Leeton High School on Myrtle Street, Leeton, at about 11am where she went to hand over to a teacher replacing her while she would be on her honeymoon in Tahiti.

The discovery of Ms Scott's remains came as a major breakthrough for police, who had been searching for her body since Wednesday night.

'Tomorrow [Saturday] should have been the happiest day of Stephanie and Aaron's lives,' Stephanie's sister Kim posted.

'To help us all through this difficult time, we invite everyone to join us at Mountford Park, Leeton, tomorrow for a lunchtime affair to celebrate the life of our 'Button-Nose'.

'Pack a picnic, wear yellow and bring your favourite memory of our unforgettable Stephanie. xxx'

Earlier on Friday police divers reportedly found what looks to be a laptop in the grim search for the body of Ms Scott.

The item was pulled out of a two-metre deep irrigation canal outside Leeton this morning, after witnesses saw a man dump something in the water on Easter Monday.

Paul Halls, who was working in the shed opposite the canal on Sunday told Fairfax Media that he saw a man pull up and head on foot to the nearby canal.

Mr Halls said the man was carrying something that looked like a laptop when he arrived, but returned to his vehicle empty handed.

"I thought it was a bit odd," Mr Halls said of the incident which took place on Griffith Road, a few kilometres out of town.

It was only when Mr Halls later heard police appealing for information about Ms Scott that he realised the possible significance of what he had seen and contacted police.

“My first reaction was 'Oh geez, I should given them a ring a couple of days ago', but you can't tell until you hear about them asking for information,” he told Fairfax Media.

Mr Halls told Seven News that the ute he saw the man driving was just like the Toyota Hilux which belongs to Stanford.

The ute is now being forensically tested after officers reportedly found traces of blood inside.

The small country town of Leeton in New South Wales will turn yellow today as the town marks the day Ms Scott would have been married.

Yellow balloons and ribbons dotted around town are serving as bittersweet reminders for Leeton locals, as the town of no more than 7000 residents grapples with the alleged murder of one of their own.

The community has rallied together to ensure Ms Scott's family know they are not alone through the tragedy.

Today will be 'Make Mountford Park Yellow Day', an impromptu tribute to the missing bride who is now presumed to have been murdered.

Stephanie's family have invited the entire town to the lunchtime event in thank you for the outpouring of support that has flowed since news of the tragedy swept through the small community.

Meanwhile, more details have emerged about what led police to charge Stanford with murder.

An inconsistency in his story led detectives to his home where keys given to the bride-to-be were found, police allege.

Police spent Thursday combing through Stanford's home, which he shares with family, taking away bags with evidence after seizing his Toyota Hilux the night before.

In it, officers allegedly found a camera with images of a burnt body.

A vineyard on the outskirts of town was also searched after finding Ms Scott's red Mazda 3 on a nearby rural property.

Gail and Bill Scanlan said Stanford had often been at their home for tea since he and his family moved next door on Maiden Avenue more than 12 months ago.

"He was very well-mannered," Mrs Scanlan said.

"He was unassuming... quiet."

Wedding joy turned to mourning

Instead of excitedly preparing for a weekend of wedding celebrations, Stephanie's fiance Aaron Leeson-Woolley kneeled with his head in his hands out at the gates of Leeton High School, joining dozens of other members of the community devastated by Ms Scott's shocking death.

The front gate has since turned into a shrine for Ms Scott with yellow balloons, ribbons and messages covering the fence.

On Thursday night, Stephanie's parents, the man she was due to marry on the weekend and her siblings visited the memorial.

More than 100 guests were due to attend the wedding, scheduled for this Saturday, including family who had travelled from overseas.

Family, friends and volunteers have been desperately searching for Stephanie since she vanished on Sunday morning.

A Facebook page 'Get Steph Home' has garnered over 17,000 followers since the teacher's disappearance.

Family members' posts on social media this week transitioned from being high-spirited to having an increasingly worried tone.

Sister Kim Scott posted a happy picture of Stephanie on Facebook on Tuesday with the caption “Today is the day you will come home. See you soon you silly sausage. xxx”

On Wednesday, Kim wrote: “Please, anyone available or who can make themselves available, get yourselves to Leeton and the surrounding areas and check those roads ... We need as much help as we can. xxx.”

Stephanie's family hired a helicopter on Wednesday afternoon to fly over the many irrigation ditches, creek crossings and bridges around Leeton, southeast of Griffith.

"It's either something with her car or foul play," Stephanie's mother Merrilyn Scott told AAP.

'She wouldn't have cold feet': Fiancé's heartbreaking plea

Family and friends of the popular Leeton High School teacher said Stephanie's sudden disappearance was particularly out of character given how excited she was about her upcoming wedding to partner of five years, Aaron Leeson-Woolley.

Mr Leeson-Woolley said he had not heard from his fiancée since Saturday when they made plans to go out for dinner on Sunday night.

She never arrived.

“We were arranging dinner on the Sunday night. She was happy to cook, but I said: 'No we'll go out for dinner',” Mr Leeson-Woolley said.

“We were just talking about what we needed to do. There was no indication anything was amiss.

"The last words she said to me were: 'I love you. Goodnight'.

"I know that she wouldn't have cold feet," Aaron told 7News reporter Ashlea Brown.

The pair met as children playing soccer in Canowindra, her family said.

Stephanie’s sister Kim told Daily Mail the bride-to-be had spent Saturday shopping for groomsmen cufflinks and a bikini for her honeymoon after months of excited preparations for the wedding, planned for this Saturday.

Kim told the Mail her sister would not just run away.

“It's really hard for Aaron to hear that, obviously it's three days she's been missing,” Kim said.

“Our sister Robyn spoke to her for 55 minutes on the phone on Saturday night about how excited she is about marrying him.

“She wants to get married and wants to be there.”

Her family has since learned that Stephanie sent an email just after noon on Sunday to a bus company confirming transport for guests on her wedding day, extending the time from when Ms Scott was last heard.

"It is the worst thing I have ever been through. You can't eat and you can't sleep," mother Merrilyn told AAP on Wednesday.

Mrs Scott said her daughter had no plans after she visited the school on Sunday.

"She normally messages a lot but he didn't really think anything sinister had happened," Mrs Scott said.

"Everything was pointing towards the wedding."
