Australia's hottest Spring on record

Australia's hottest Spring on record

It's official spring 2014 is Australia's warmest since records began and we're on track for a sizzling summer, says Seven's National Meteorolgist David Brown.

The weather bureau's data highlights mean temperatures were 1.67C above the 1961-1990 average, the largest such departure from the long-term average since national records began in 1910.

Numerous records were approached or set, including the nation's warmest October day on record, 36.39 degrees on 25 October.

However, Spring 2014 set a whole new meaning to smashing the record book. The maximum temperature anomaly of +2.33 degrees is the biggest for any season, surpassing +2.17 degrees set in autumn 2005.

The extraordinary season saw Longreach in central-west Queensland set a new November heatwave record of 11 consecutive days of 40 degrees or more. In addition, it appears the heat will continue this summer throughout most of the country as El Nino takes hold.

I'm predicting that 2014 might just eclipse Australia's hottest year ever - last year! It'll be close, but there's no doubt it'll be a podium finish.
