Scottish referendum live: Voters deciding on independence from UK

The polls have closed in Scotland, where 4 million voters have been choosing whether to stay on as part of the United Kingdom.

Voters were faced with the question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

Pre-voting opinion polls gave the No campaign a slight edge, but hundreds of thousands of people were still making up their minds as polling stations opened.

Polls closed around 7:00am (AEST). A result is expected later today but earlier partial results are likely to give an indication of the trend.
