New court bid to prevent second mosque for Canberra

The fight to prevent a mosque being built in Canberra's north may not be over after opponents lodged a new application in the ACT Supreme Court.

The Concerned Citizens of Canberra group has been trying to stop planning approval for a mosque in the Gungahlin town centre.

The lobby group missed the deadline to lodge an appeal against a court decision which threw out their challenge to the mosque earlier this year.

But today their lawyers have asked the court to allow them to seek leave to lodge an appeal despite missing the cut-off date.

The court has agreed to hear the application in November.

A mosque with 500-person capacity was approved for a site on The Valley Avenue at Gungahlin in 2012.

Members of Canberra's muslim community have been fundraising to build the city's second mosque through a donation campaign.

The ACT's first mosque is located at Yarralumla, in the city's south.

The community had hoped to have the second mosque built within 12 months.
