WA senate election results finalised

WA senate election results finalised

WA will have three Liberal Senators from July along within one each from the Labor, Greens and Palmer United Party.

This afternoon, the Australian Electoral Commission officially declared the results of the April 5 Senate election rerun, confirming outcomes that were expected.

AEC spokesman Phil Diak said the Liberal Party had won three of the six available spots.

Defence Minister David Johnston, who occupied first place on the Liberal ticket, was returned with a full quote.

Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Michaelia Cash and Linda Reynolds were also elected on subsequent counts.

Ms Reynolds won the final, sixth, Senate spot after beating Labor's Louise Pratt to the position.

For Labor, union heavyweight Joe Bullock was the only one elected, relegating the party to one of its worst results in a WA election.

Greens MP Scott Ludlam was elected, while Dio Wang from the Palmer United Party won the other place.

Today's announcement draws a line under one of the most embarrassing episodes in the AEC's history after it was forced to rerun the WA Senate election because of bungling with the original ballot.

Mr Diak said that while the results were technically open to challenge, it was beyond doubt.
