Woman discovers friend trapped in roof for four days

An elderly woman stuck in her roof for four days has been rescued after a friend dropped by to check on her.

Emergency crews were called to a property in the Geelong suburb of Marshall, south of Melbourne, around 10.30am.

They were alerted by a friend who had knocked on the door and heard the woman's cries for help.

Friend Sheila said it was "lucky" she popped by.

"She wasn't answering her mobile phone, and I thought that was strange," Sheila said.

"I only knocked on the door and I could hear her calling out help, help, so that's when I went to a neighbour to get [help]."

"She called out to me 'Thank you Sheila'".

Paramedics arrived to find the woman, aged in her 70s, collapsed but conscious.

She had climbed up manhole to fix a draught but slipped, fell and got stuck.

"The plaster was all down from the ceiling and she was stuck in between the rafters, I understand," friend Sheila said.

Rescuers freed the woman around midday, carrying her down into the house on a spineboard.

The woman is suffering from an arm injury and dehydration.

She has been taken to Geelong Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.
