Groupie Doll wins Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

Arcadia (United States) (AFP) - Groupie Doll won the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint for the second straight year at Santa Anita Park on Saturday.

The five-year-old mare, trained by William "Buff" Bradley and ridden by Rajiv Maragh, didn't display the same dominance she showed in a 4 1/2-length victory on the same track last year.

But her late run around the turn for home saw her cross the line half a length in front Judy the Beauty in the seven-furlong race.

Judy the Beauty had Luis Saez in the irons in place of John Velazquez, who was injured when his horse broke down in an earlier race, and took second, half a length in front of Dance Card.

Groupie Doll, last year's 7-10 favorite, went off at 3-1. Her time of 1:20.75 was a hair off her 2012 winning time of 1:20.72.

Groupie Doll is one of eight 2012 Breeders' Cup champions in action again this weekend, including Fort Larned in the $5 million Classic.
