Boy helps grandfather win big on Keno
A Queensland boy has given his granddad the perfect Father's Day present while out buying fishing gear.
The Logan grandfather won $2.329 million after the boy suggested they go into a pub for a meal.
The 60-year-old man decided to play Keno. The 10 winning numbers he selected were all different cominations of his grandson's birthday.
"You've no idea how much that is really going to help and what it means to us at this time," the winner told News Ltd.
"You hear people say 'it's not going to change our life'. Well, I say 'good luck to them'.
"It's going to change ours - for the better. And it will change our children's lives as well."
The family has been through a difficult period over the past few months.
The winner, who chose not to be identified, lost his job three months ago and just two weeks ago, his partner lost her mother.
In possibly the most savage blow, their eldest grandson was diagnosed with bone cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.
The winner said he nearly missed the moment his numbers came up on the screen, while buying a milkshake for his grandson.
"It was actually because of him (we won).
"Kmart had a sale on fishing gear, so we decided to go to that.
"On the way back my grandson said 'I'd like to get some lunch' so we headed to the Club.
"I'd ordered our milkshakes so I went to get them and while I was walking I'd seen six of my numbers come out and thought 'gee that's good; if I could just get seven or eight'.
"Then, I thought I saw nine, and then 10 come up.
"I was walking back to tell my partner that we'd won when we saw it flash up on the screen that the 10-number jackpot had gone off and I thought 'damn, we just missed it - someone else has got it'
"Then my grandson overheard someone at the table next to us and he turned to my partner and said 'Nan, someone at the Club Hotel has won $2 million'.
"She kicked me under the table. I knew it was us.
"We felt so sick in the stomach we couldn't even touch our lunch."
Queenslanders collect about $28 million worth of Keno winnings each month.
