Doctors threaten to walk off job

Doctors in South Australia’s public hospitals are threatening to walk off the job over proposed rostering changes.

Dozens of doctors have attended a meeting at Findon’s Adelaide Arena in a bid to nut out a resolution.

They said extended rosters proposed for specialists as part of the new enterprise bargaining agreement are simply dangerous.

Their union claimed it could see some working more than 100 hours a week, and could put patient lives at risk.

“You can’t have fatigued doctors making important decisions about patient lives when you have got ath sort of situation at foot,” David Pope from the Salaried Medical Officers Association said.

Potential industrial action could include rolling stop-work meetings, but doctors insist they will not jeopardise patient care.

Nurses are also considering striking over their workloads at Flinders Medical Centre and the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
