Caravan park saga 'like The Castle'

Social justice campaigner Tim Costello says the plight of Brighton Caravan Park evictees is Adelaide’s real-life version of The Castle.

Residents of the park, on Adelaide’s southern beaches, are facing eviction as the Holdfast Bay Council plans the park’s redevelopment.

Mr Costello is so moved by their battle to stay, he was reduced to tears at a packed public meeting at Seacliff last night where they pleaded to stay put.

Senator Nick Xenophon has joined the residents in their battle.

“If the council won’t be reasonable and if it has to go all the way to the High Court, then so be it,” Senator Nick Xenophon said.

They are drawing inspiration from Australia’s famous battler story – The Castle.

“It’s more than just their battle – this is our battle written many times over in what worries us about what is happening to this nation,” Mr Costello said.

The Holdfast Bay Council is still finalising its plans for the site.

Mr Xenophon said the state government should intervene and ‘advise council to do the right thing by these residents’.

As the saga continues to drag out, residents at the Brighton Caravan Park are slowly leaving, one by one.

“Council have worn people down… because we are just constantly in a state of limbo,” resident Sue Caddy told 7News.

Of the 44 park residents in January, just 28 remain.
