Shock after Sydney commuters ignore injured man

The willingness of Sydneysiders to lend a hand has been questioned after exclusive vision was obtained by 7News.

The video shows people ignoring, and some even stepping over, a rail traveller left unconscious after falling down a flight of stairs.

The passenger stumbles down the flight of stairs at around 7am at Canley Vale Station.

There is a passenger at the bottom of the stairs who sees the incident and turns away.

The man lies unconscious on the stairs with the back of his head cut open.

While he starts to move, a train passenger walks up the stairs and steps over the injured man.

Finally, a full two minutes later, help arrives and a man finally stops. Closely followed behind in the station manager who calls for an ambulane.
Commuters were shocked when they saw the video: "What's happening in this world if we can't stop and help people."

NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian told 7News: "We're moving people, not trains. And that is an important message I send to all the staff and we're beginning to see customer service is more and more at the forefront of everything our staff are doing."

Broadcaster Richard Glover says the pictures show Sydney' worst and best: "Then the guy stepping over the guy and you think what sort of city are we living in? And then again, the third person does come to their rescue."

Ten minutes later the man, who may have been drinking, got up with no major injuries and jumped on a train, leaving us only with a question, what would you have done if you'd seen him there? Tell us on our Facebook page

Some passengers say they would have helped right away: "If I seen that of course I'd stop and help, straight away."

"I would risk it and shake him and see if I could wake him a little bit."

They may worry about the medical, or legal, implications of giving first-aid.

But a call to triple zero carries zero risk.
