Riverwalk final design unveiled

Work has begun on rebuilding the Riverwalk after it washed away during Brisbane's 2011 flood.

The Brisbane City Council has finished its design stage, but residents will have to wait until 2014 to enjoy the new structure.

Brisbane City Council has unveiled pictures of the final product - which includes a walkway that extends into the Brisbane River more than the original pathway.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the flood damaged structure would be reconstructed to ensure it was more flood resilient. It was designed to last at least 100 years.

“We expect that once Riverwalk is reconstructed, it will become a river experience like no other, with the new alignment taking visitors further out into the river.

“Before it was washed away in the January 2011 floods, Riverwalk was used by more than 3,000 cyclists, pedestrians and runners daily," he said.

New features on the Riverwalk will include a rotating section at the Merthyr Road end of the walkway so boats may come and go to private moorings.

The new Riverwalk will also have a number of features to increase safety, with 24 hour lighting and separated pedestrian and cyclist paths.

Cr Quirk said the completion of detailed design would now allow Council to announce construction tender in early 2013. Construction is anticipated to begin about one month after the tender has been awarded.

“Construction is expected to take about 18 months to complete, weather permitting, before Riverwalk will be re-opened for residents and visitors to enjoy once again,” he said.
