Angus’ brave battle against bone marrow disease

Four-year-old Angus Bond has been battling a rare form of bone marrow disease his entire life.

He suffers from Diamond Blackfan Anaemia – a disease caused by the body’s inability to produce red blood cells.

Every night for 12 hours he is treated with steroids and regularly requires transfusions.

The disease is so rare, there is no research being carried out into the disease, so Angus’ family have been raising money to fund its own research.

They have already risen close to a million dollars.

That money has been given to local scientists, who have already discovered Angus’ blood cells do not make their own protein and self-destruct.

Professor Richard D’Andrea from the Basil Hetzel Institute said: “If we can understand what the problem is in the cells, we can come up with processes to trigger that protein production.”

The research will also provide more valuable information for the fight against cancer in general.
