Marble slab falls from high-rise building

An unusually quiet morning at the top end of Collins Street may have saved lives after a large slab of marble fell ten floors from a high-rise building.

Witnesses saw the slab plunge from the Suncorp building in Collins Street at 11:30am (AEDT), crashing into the courtyard on the corner of Collins and Williams Streets below.

Several windows were shattered and workers say it sounded 'like a bomb going off'.

The area is directly in front of a cafe and witnesses say it would normally be busy with coffee drinkers and smokers.

Police have cordoned off the forecourt, and there are no reports of any injuries.

However, the near miss has raised questions about the safety of the building and the lack of restoration.

The area will be closed for at least the next few days while engineers put up safety barriers.
