One of Australia’s most talented and best known actors, Bill Hunter; passed away on 21 May 2011 at the age of 71.

Recent films by Hunter include ‘Strictly Ballroom’, Muriel’s Wedding’, and ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’.

Hunter was remembered for more than 60 films, television and theatre credits over 35 years, and winning two Australian Film Institute Awards.

He was admitted to Caritas Christi hospice in Kew on 15 May 2011, and died just 6 days later due to liver cancer.

A memorial service was held for Hunter at the Princess Theatre on the 26th of May in Melbourne.

Prime Minister, Julia Gillard referred to Bill Hunter as an icon and honoured his life by paying tribute to his national contribution on and off stage defining Australian culture for five decades. Gillard believes that Hunter was a huge influence in the aid of Australia’s development of national identity.

Other various tributes were held for the icon through social network pages such as Facebook and Twitter as politician figures and celebrity personalities expressed their grief and praise of Bill Hunter’s legendary career and life.
