Police inspect the scene of the attack at Glengowrie, early this morning.

A 25-year-old man is recovering in hospital after three men viciously attacked him following a failed robbery attempt.

South Australian police say just after midnight, the man was walking down Diagonal Rd at Somerton Park, in Adelaide's southern suburbs, when the three men pulled up in a dark coloured car alongside him.

Two of the men then approached the 25-year-old demanding cash and threatening him with a screwdriver and a knife.

When he told them he didn't have any money to hand over, police allege the two men then attacked him with the hammer and began to kick him once he fell to the ground.

The man tried to run off, but was chased by the third bandit, still in the car.

At one point the car even mounted the kerb and hit the 23-year-old, who eventually managed to escape.

He has now been taken to the Flinders Medical Centre for injuries to his head and face.

The three attackers are described as Caucasian, between 160 to 165 centimetres tall, all wearing hooded tops.

The dark coloured car they were travelling in is possible a maroon coloured Nissan.

Police are asking anyone with further information on the incident to contact BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to their website.
