Qantas strike could spark flight chaos

Industrial action is set to cause disruption for thousands of Qantas passengers today.

The Herald Sun reports as many as 7000 people could have their flights cancelled or delayed while baggage handlers, ground crew, catering staff and engineers strike during peak flight times.

The Transport Workers Union has also banned some paperwork duties, which could lead to further delays over the next two days. The industrial action relates to a long-term discussion over pay and job security.

Qantas said it is adding four larger aircraft to its service to help lessen the number of passengers disrupted. Management staff are also being called away from their offices to perform some of the union members' tasks.

The strike is not expected to cause problems for trans-Tasman flights.
