Victorian man told he is pregnant

A hospital bungle has left a middle-aged man wondering whether he should organise a baby shower for the unborn child he has been told he is carrying.

Truck driver John Berry, of Deer Park, received a letter thanking him for choosing to have his baby at Sunshine Hospital, and confirming his pregnancy booking.

Mr Berry, who suffers with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, was told his baby's estimated date of birth, and advised he would soon need to see a doctor.

But despite what he admits is a heavier than normal stomach, Mr Berry is reasonably confident he is not about to give birth.

"I'm definitely not pregnant," he insists. "I've had a few beers, but I'm definitely not pregnant."

John Berry was stunned to receive a letter from Sunshine Hospital confirming his pregnancy booking.

John was referred to the hospital by a doctor - for treatment on his injured hand - and not only did the hospital think he was pregnant, John cannot get an assessment for his hand for eight weeks.

He said he was expecting a letter confirming the treatment, but was shocked and amused to discover that he was in fact expecting a baby.

Although Mr Berry laughed off the mistake, he said it casts serious doubt on the efficiency of our health system.

And he is having second thoughts about the operation.

"Will I come out with a hand or will I come out with my foot missing," he said. "This is what worries me now."

Mr Berry said he could have gone down in history - but instead he has found himself the butt of endless jokes. The prospect of his pregnancy has delighted his colleagues.

Western Health has blamed the blunder on an administrative error which led to Mr Berry being sent the wrong letter.

It also says it will be able to give him a time for his hand surgery once he's been assessed.
