Dougherty gang sister says she ‘deserved to get shot’

Lee Grace Dougherty, the oldest sibling of the Dougherty Gang, told police that she “deserved to get shot” after she was wounded and captured.

After a 160 km/hr car chase in Colorado that culminated with a crash when the trio failed to avoid spikes on the road, Lee Grace tried to escape carrying a machine pistol. She then stopped and pointed the firearm at Walsenburg Police Chief Chamberlain, who shot her in the right thigh.

“The cop said drop the gun,” the former stripper said in a confession to FBI Agent Christian Mohr. “I pointed the gun at the cop. I deserved to get shot."

According to the police affidavit, Lee Grace said that she dropped her gun after she felt the bullet hit her leg. “The pain was all through my body," she said.

Lee Grace Dougherty, 29, her brother Ryan, 21, and half-brother Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 26, embarked on a week-long crime spree that reportedly saw them robbing a bank in Georgia and shooting at a police officer in Florida.

During the 32 kilometre car chase that led to their capture, the Dougherty gang allegedly fired an AK-47 assault rifle at pursuing cops.

“We weren't trying to hurt anyone, we just wanted them to get back," Lee Grace said. "They were way back and we could barely see them. We were getting shot at, then we wrecked.”

The three siblings appeared in court today via video and are being held on a US$1.25 million bond each.
