Young Canberra couple in lockdown scoop entire $20m Powerball jackpot

A lucky Canberra couple has taken out the $20 million Powerball jackpot.

The pair, in their 30s, held the only division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1320 drawn on Thursday night.

After initially avoiding phone calls from Lott officials, the young Belconnen couple finally answered the phone to learn the division one prize of $20,507,103 was all theirs.

"Oh my god!” the winning man exclaimed while his wife screamed in the background, The Lott said in a statement.

“I saw I had two missed calls, and I thought, ‘who’s calling me at this time?’. I thought, ‘I’m not answering this. They’re probably ringing with bad news’. I’m glad I answered now!

“We were literally still working when you called," he said.

“I don’t buy lottery tickets that often, but lately we’ve been like, ‘let’s just do it. Who knows?’".

The news is reportedly still sinking in for the couple, who plan to use the huge windfall to help their family and buy a house.

"This is just going to mean a lot for the whole family,” the winning man told The Lott.

“I want to help my parents and siblings. I want to buy a house for our young family. It’s going to make a world of difference.”

The winning numbers in Powerball draw 1320 on Thursday 2 September 2021 were 17, 25, 12, 5, 4, 28 and 14. The all-important Powerball number was 10.
