Key North Korean ambassadors called to Pyongyang for meeting

Key North Korean ambassadors have been called back to Pyongyang for a joint meeting, officials confirmed to local media.

The meeting reportedly includes Ambassadors Ji Jae-ryong, Ja Song-nam and Hyong-jun, North Korea's top envoys to China, the United Nations and Russia, respectively. It is not known how many others are in attendance.

"North Korea seems to be hosting what appears to be a meeting of foreign diplomatic missions' chiefs after calling its ambassadors to major countries back to Pyongyang," a government official told Yonhap News Agency.

The meeting comes as the communist country draws unprecedentedly intense international condemnation for its nuclear and missile programs.

Ministry of Unification's spokesman Baik Tae-hyun speculated the meeting could be part of North Korea's regular gathering of ambassadors.

"North Korea held the 43rd ambassadors' meeting in July 2015 and [the latest meeting] seems to be in line with that," the spokesman told a press briefing.

Regardless, it is speculated the meeting will likely focus on the difficult international circumstance North Korea is currently handling after its two recent intercontinental ballistic missile launches, and further missile tests.

In recent days, Trump and the North Korean regime have engaged in heated rhetoric about the Asian nation's nuclear weapons program.

Trump warned last Tuesday the US would rain down “fire and fury” on Pyongyang if North Korea followed through with its threat to attack the US-held Pacific island of Guam.
