Mother held organs for 40 minutes while waiting for ambulance

A new mother has described the horrific moment her caesarean scar ripped open, spilling out her bowel and intestines.

Sam Bell, from Liphook in the United Kingdom, gave birth to daughter Chloe on March 24 and was given the all clear to leave hospital.

Several days later, a midwife came to her home and removed her stitches, in what was a routine procedure.

But when the 28-year-old stood up afterwards she noticed her jeans were stuck to her stomach.

When she opened her trousers, her insides tumbled out.

"I just felt this twinge,” Ms Bell told the Mirror.

“It almost felt like my trousers were stuck to my stomach, so I pulled them open.

"I looked down and as I did that my wound opened and my bowel and intestines just fell out.”

The mother-of-two said the pain was excruciating but said she was forced to hold her organs for 40 minutes until an ambulance arrived.

“It was quite tough because I was crying but trying not to cry because I didn’t know how much else could come out of me.”

Ms Bell spent another four days in hospital and required 20 staples to hold her organs in place.

A spokesperson for St Hellier’s hospital apologised to the young mother.

“We offer our full and sincerest apologies to Ms Bell for what must have been a very distressing experience,” they said in a statement.

“Immediately following this incident, a full review and investigation was launched.”
