NAPLAN results: Canberra schools make 'most improved' list in latest My School update

Twenty Canberra schools included on a national list have shown a significant improvement in literacy and numeracy skills among students, according to results from last year's NAPLAN tests.

Fourteen ACT primary schools and six secondary schools made the "high gains" list of more than 300 schools from across Australia.

The listed local schools included a mix of private and public schools across most regions of the ACT.

The data is included in the MySchool 2015 update, which provides the latest financial figures, profile and performance of schools.

Stanley Rabinowitz, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority's (ACARA) assessment and reporting general manager, said the Canberra results were consistent with national trends.

"Remember, there are a lot fewer schools in Canberra in the ACT than in other states and territories, so the number is consistent with what we're seeing around the country," he said.

"So no more, no less. It's just a good number and we're glad that these schools are doing good work."

Hugh Boulter from the ACT Parents and Citizens Association said parents should interpret results carefully, and focus on their child's individual performance.

"Our primary concern is that these tables are used out of context and they are not discussed in a valid manner," he said

"From our point of view, the parents are given their own children's results in November last year, and they are the real results that need to be looked at closely by parents, because they're the only things they really can impact on in terms of influencing.

"Where the school is located and so on, there are a lot of things which can't be influenced by parents."

Mr Boulter said the aim should be about providing support and funding for individual schools.

The list released by ACARA indicates schools who significantly improved their NAPLAN results in 2014 in a specific subject area, and is not indicative of ranking or the quality of students' performance overall.

More information on specific schools can be found on the My School website.
