A visit to Thailand may come with an electronic ID wristband, according to the country’s tourism minister.

Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul revealed plans for tourists to be issued with the wristbands in the wake of the murder of British tourists David Miller and Hannah Witheridge in Koh Tao, the Daily Mail reported.

“When tourists check in to a hotel they will be given a wristband with a serial number that matches their ID and shows the contact details of the resort they are staying in, so that if they're out partying late and, for example, get drunk or lost, they can be easily assisted,” Wattanavrangkul was quoted as saying.

She also said there were plans for the bands to eventually include some kind of electronic tracking device and discussions were under way about a potential “buddy system” where tourists would be paired with local minders at popular locations.

The minister acknowledged that some hotels were concerned that tourists would not want to wear the bands, but said that most people welcomed the idea.
