Woolworths has launched a line of surprising novelty merchandise targeted at children in the lead-up to Christmas.
The supermarket has started selling a miniature checkout that comes with 47 accessories including a cash register, item scanner, plastic fruit, a mock point-of-sale screen and Woolworths signage.
Earlier in the year, the retailer began selling a branded small brown paper bag complete with the standard features of a full-sized version, a spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.
The mini-supermarket toy is currently selling for its entrance price of $40, but will soon be bumped up to its $60 retail price.
Excited parents have been snapping up the set, available at 900 stores nationwide, in time to put under the tree for their kids.
“With Christmas around the corner and parents starting to look for fun gifts that fosters creativity and imagination, we've introduced a mini Woolworths supermarket for all the fresh food kids in the making,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.
Some parents have already gifted the toy to their children and shared photos to social media of them enjoying making use of it.
“I saw it and had to get it, and it’s a hit with my younger girls who couldn’t wait to play with it,” one shopper wrote in a post to the retailer’s Facebook page.
“This mini shop is so adorable, my kids love it. Also mini shopping trolleys would be cute too,” another parent said.
Someone else commented saying they thought the toy was “great” and was keeping her eyes peeled at local stores so she could buy one.
