Woman's sinister find in surveillance footage after feeling ill for months

A Californian engineer who continued to inexplicably fall ill for weeks at a time has made a distressing discovery, ultimately leading to her co-worker’s arrest.

After months of feeling under the weather, Rong Yuan eventually noticed a “strange taste or smell” coming from her water bottle and any food that was left unattended in the office at Berkeley Engineering and Research.

Once she consumed the food and drink, Yuan reported “immediate and significant health problems” that on occasion required emergency care, according to court documents obtained by local news site Berkeleyside.

Not only did she fall ill, but so too did two of her relatives, who reportedly experienced health problems after drinking water from Yuan’s bottle.

Their blood samples revealed all three were suffering from elevated levels of cadmium, a silver white metal capable of severely irritating the stomach and leading to vomiting, diarrhoea and even death.

It wasn’t until she was able to view surveillance footage from her office that she said she saw her fellow colleague, David Xu allegedly putting an unknown substance into her bottle.

Water samples taken the same day contained a “toxic amount of cadmium”, the documents revealed.

Berkeley police arrested the 34-year-old last week on charges of premeditated attempted murder resulting in great bodily injury and two counts of felony poisoning.
