Woman's naked body found by fishermen at popular tourist spot

The naked body of a missing woman has been found floating in the sea by fishermen.

Ana Victoria Ávila, known as ‘Nani’ among loved ones, went missing last Wednesday. The family's worst fears were later confirmed when Fishermen found the victim’s body floating in the water three days later on March 30, local time.

Her naked corpse was discovered in the sea about 32 kilometres south of the popular tourist destination of Cancun, Mexico.

Concerned family members reported her disappearance when they failed to contact her on the phone.

Ávila, who came from Córdoba, Argentina, had been living in Mexico since December. She was based in the resort city of Playa del Carmen where she worked as a photographer for weddings and other social events.

Following an autopsy, the authorities announced that her cause of death was drowning. According to the report, the 28-year-old's body showed no signs of violence or sexual abuse.

Ávila studied photography at the Provincial University of Córdoba and the National University of Córdoba. On social media, she described herself as a documentary maker and photographer. She also worked as a camera operator and video editor and taught introductory photography courses online.

Shocked friends have mourned her sudden and mysterious death. "Nani was someone who everybody wanted as a friend, an incredible person, fun, with a great sense of humour," close friend, Tamara Combina said.

"She was also a strong and determined woman ... And an incredible photographer, a hell of a professional, with unique creativity."
