'We're free': Woman's words for 2500 personalities after rapist father's conviction

A woman who developed more than 2500 personalities to cope with monstrous sexual abuse at the hands of her father said her alter egos are “finally free” after he was jailed for 45 years.

Jennifer Haynes’s father Richard, 74, pleaded guilty mid-trial in March to dozens of counts of rape, buggery and indecent assault committed against Jennifer in the 1970s and 1980s.

She has dissociative identity disorder, previously known as multiple personality disorder, which she developed to deal with her father’s abuse.

She created "Muscles" and four-year-old "Symphony", who were two of 33 personalities she embodied to provide evidence in court to convict her father.

Ms Haynes, 49, was aged between four and 11 at the time of the abuse.

Last week, the 74-year-old was sentenced to a minimum term of 33 years.

Ms Haynes told 60 Minutes she’s now told all of her personalities, which she developed to cope with years of abuse, to “stand down”.

"For every one of my alters, every person inside me, the war is over," she told 60 Minutes.

"We're going to rise from the ashes of this monstrous life we've had. We're going to walk forward and claim our rightful place in society."

Haynes, who was extradited from the UK in 2017, will be eligible for parole in 2050, when he would be 104.
