Woman wins $2.6 million with Lotto ticket she didn't buy

The South Australian received the ticket as a birthday present.

A woman in South Australia has won an impressive $2.58 million Lotto prize despite not purchasing the winning ticket.

The ecstatic Moonta resident received the Saturday Lotto ticket as a birthday gift from her in-laws.

“I told them straight away and they thought we were pulling their leg," she recalled. "It’s so surreal. What a great birthday gift!”

She said it's "crazy to think" she'd left the birthday card the ticket was tucked inside in her postbox for three days.

“We opened it up, checked the ticket and was blown away. I thought that I would’ve just won $20 - not $2.58 million!" she said.

She now plans on buying their first home as well as giving back to her in-laws.

“This ticket is a gift, so we look forward to giving back to our families. They’ve changed our lives and we look forward to doing the same.”

The winning numbers in Saturday Lotto draw 4385 on July 29 were 45, 42, 3, 32, 37 and 14, while the supplementary numbers were 17 and 20.

Australia's remarkable lottery tales

Her story is one several remarkable lottery tales of 2023, with a Powerball winner in March only realising he had a $40 million ticket stuffed in his pocket a week after the draw.

In January a woman scooped $3 million after accidentally entering the wrong lotto game.

This week the Powerball could make history by handing out $100 million to back-to-back winners for the first time in the game's 27-year history.
