A woman is recovering in hospital after being stabbed in the head at one of Australia's most famous beaches.

Police responded to reports of a woman, aged 36, being stabbed in the head on Roscoe Street at Bondi Beach in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, just before 11am on Friday.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the woman for a head injury before she was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital in a stable condition.

Weapon reportedly a screwdriver

It is understood a screwdriver was involved in the alleged stabbing but this is yet to be confirmed by police, News Corp reported. One business owner on Roscoe St reported seeing multiple police swarm the footpath.

Rev Jon Owen, CEO and Pastor of Wayside Chapel told NCA NewsWire the workers are “distressed” about what had occurred. "We do all we can to ensure the safety and care of those who attend our community centres," he said.

"We are all distressed about the events that transpired at Bondi Beach this morning. Our hearts are with the victim of this attack as she recovers in the hospital.

"We are working with authorities and doing all we can to support those who were present during the incident and were affected by it."
