Pet owner, 28, dies trying to save her dog after it ran on highway

A young woman has died trying to save her dog after it ran out on a highway.

Kate Mason, 28, from the US State of Virginia, was driving in Stafford County on Saturday at about 10pm when she ran off the road and crashed into a guardrail, CBS 6 reports.

Her pet pug Stella then managed to get out of the car and run along the highway.

The 28-year-old chased her dog but was tragically hit by a car and killed. The dog also died after being hit by a car.

Ms Mason’s family told reporters she was selfless and had a passion for helping people. She was also a member of the US army, serving in the National Guard and Reserves as a medic while also studying at Virginia Commonwealth University. She graduated in 2013.

The crash is still being investigated.
