Woman gives birth to whopping 6.7kg baby boy

A woman has given birth to a huge bundle of joy with her newborn baby boy breaking hospital records weighing in at 14 pounds and 13 ounces (6.7 kilograms).

Ali James Medlock was born on December 12 in the Arlington Memorial Hospital in the US state of Texas.

Parents Jennifer and Eric Medlock thought their firstborn daughter, Annabelle, was a big baby when she was born weighing 4.4 kilograms two years ago, but Ali was more than a kilo heavier.

The newborn boy measured 54.6 centimetres long – a record-breaker for the hospital – and the biggest baby their doctor had ever delivered in his 30-plus-year career, USA Today reported.

Due to his size, baby Ali had to remain in the neonatal intensive care unit for a week as his blood sugar and platelets were too low, and he experienced rapid breathing.

The big baby’s condition has since improved and he was released on December 19 just in time for Christmas.

Ali and mum are reportedly doing well.

The news of the boy’s birth weight came as a shock to Ms Medlock who delivered her son via C-section.

“We did not expect 14 pounds,” she said.

“Nobody did.”
