Woman dies in tram collision

A woman has died after being hit by a tram in St Kilda Road this morning.

The 37-year-old pedestrian was struck about 9am this morning on the corner of High Street and St Kilda Road, near Albert Park.

Paramedics say she suffered head and abdominal injuries and was trapped under the tram for about 10 minutes.

It is understood resuscitation was carried out at the scene, but they were unable to revive the victim.

A male witness has told the Herald Sun he saw the woman run across the road to try and catch the tram, which was already on the move.

The woman attempted to get on the moving tram but slipped underneath, he said.

"It wasn't the driver's fault, there was nothing he could have done," he told the newspaper.

A Yarra Trams spokesperson said the tram driver is shocked and traumatised by the incident and is receiving counselling.

St Kilda Road tram services have been disrupted as a result of the incident, with some routes being diverted.
