Woman accuses Asian couple in IGA of spreading Covid

A woman has been filmed going on a tirade against a couple in a supermarket, accusing them of spreading coronavirus.

Video posted to Facebook from Ken Mak, a Chinese man living in Canada, shows the woman’s expletive-ridden rant at an IGA in Montreal.

“‘All of these 21 months of bulls*** … All of these f****** epidemic that became a pandemic, it’s because of you Chinese people,” she says, giving the middle finger.

“F*** you.”

Mr Mak interjects and says, “what’s wrong with you?”

But the woman continues her racist rant.

Mr Mak later called it “unacceptable”.

“We all have been through the lockdowns, the curfews, and the hardships in Quebec together just like everyone else,” he wrote on Facebook.

“All crises end, but until then we need to support each other, not blaming innocent people.”

Montreal mayor Valérie Plante condemned the woman’s behaviour on Twitter.

“Anti-Asian racism has no place in Montreal, and this type of aggression should never be tolerated,” she tweeted.

Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils told CBC News the woman was removed from the store. It’s not clear if she was charged with an offence though.

A survey of 874 first and second-generation Chinese Canadians by The University of Victoria found two-thirds had experienced some form of disrespect, Global News reported.

Doris Mah, co-founder of the Stand With Asians Coalition, told the news outlet the study showed Chinese Canadians received some form of abuse regardless of their proficiency in English, profession or income.

“You still feel racism,” she said.
