A woman has shared the devastating story behind a photo of herself and a group of friends, all of whom she outlived before turning 30.
At just 29 years old, a Reddit user from the US state Maryland, is the only surviving member in a photo shared to the social media site on the weekend, including a baby.
The group became friends in high school and together explored illegal drugs, but soon each developed an addiction to heroin.
The woman shared a photo of them together from 2011 where she is pictured second from the left. She said she was the youngest of the clan and suffered the loss of her best friend, the other female in the photo, first in 2013.
“She was my first friend to go and she was my best friend,” she wrote.
Her friend was pictured with her fiancé holding their baby, who died of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) a few years earlier.
Another few years following the death of his partner, the baby’s dad died, and less than a year later, so did the fiancé of the woman who made the post.
Talking about her own daughter, the woman remembered her fiancé as treating her baby like it was his own.
“Although my fiancé was not her biological father, he was her father in every other way,” she wrote.
She said she stopped using heroin after falling pregnant, despite having abused it for a decade.
She has now been sober for five years and named her daughter after her best friend.
Despite her triumph, she admitted she still struggles sometimes to keep her head above water.
“As a parent I still feel depressed a lot.. Having a baby doesn't fix everything ... She's just the reason I keep pushing,” she wrote.
Hundreds of others shared similar stories of their own loved ones being killed by drug addiction, highlighting the country’s out-of-control problem.
