If you're a dog owner in Windsor, you may qualify to get some money back.

As part of the city's recently-finalized 2024 budget, the city is waiving registration fees during the dog licensing process if the applicant can provide proof that their animal has been both neutered and micro chipped.

The standard fees for a first animal can vary between $17 and $47 depending on the date of registration.

The city's manager of licensing Craig Robertson said the fee exemption would also be enforced retroactively.

"If you've already registered your dog with the city and paid your fee already, you'd then be be required to provide proof that those thresholds have been met and we would process a refund," Robertson told CBC News.

But, he also added that the refund process would take some weeks to get up and running.

"It's going to take a couple weeks to get this refund process in order as well as send some stuff out through social media and to the public to make them aware that this is happening," Robertson added. "I'm hopeful that we can get this process finalized in the next few weeks and start issuing some of those refunds."

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society said this will encourage people to get their dogs neutered and micro chipped.

Pet value

While registering dogs in Windsor is becoming a less costly process, there's a deal for cat lovers as well.

Melanie Coulter, executive director of the humane society, told Windsor Morning that they are offering prospective feline adopters the chance to take home two cats at once.

If you choose to adopt two bonded cats until Valentine's day, you can get them both for free.
